The Region IX Regional Training Center provides approximately 40-50 training events per year, reaching over 2,300 participants each year in California, Hawaii, Nevada, Navajo Nation, Arizona and the Pacific Basin. These training events include a variety of approaches to reach our target audience of Title X providers, including face-to-face training, audio conferences and "webinars," trainings of trainers and statewide conferences in Hawaii, Arizona and the Pacific Basin. The most requested training topics include Counseling Teens, Sexual Abuse and Coercion, Pregnancy Counseling, Serving Males, Contraceptive Updates, Sexual Health/Risk Reduction and Family Planning Basics. CHT also provides numerous technical assistance visits to Title X agencies, with approval from our Regional Program Consultant.
Unique to Region IX is our work in the Pacific Basin. For over 25 years, CHT has been conducting family planning training for Title X staff in the Marshall Islands, Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Federated States of Micronesia. This work has intensified over the last few years, aiming to increase quality of care for these remote populations.
The Family Planning Basics course was developed in 2005 to meet the ongoing need of training new clinic staff, both entry-level and those new to family planning. The course includes testing for staff who are striving to achieve CHT's family planning competency certification. Two training videos were developed to train new staff: "Contraceptive Choices: What Your Clients Need To Know" and "Effective Education and Counseling." A client education video for teens, entitled "It's Your Choice" has been sold to schools and clinics worldwide.
In 2008, our Western Region Institute for Health Educators (WRICHE) added a "T" to its title to include teachers as participants in this event. This Institute is now co-sponsored by the California Department of Education to increase the partnership between teachers and community educators to provide sexuality education.
The Enhancing Clinic Efficiency (ECE) Project was established to give clinics the tools to assess current levels of productivity and determine ways to improve efficiency. CHT utilizes research-based principles of efficient operation and best practices to help guide and support the clinics' efforts in implementing new systems and approaches.
Technical Assistance is also provided on approval from the Regional Program Consultant (RPC).
