In This Training
Many clients seen in family planning clinics are having unprotected sex which puts them at risk for unplanned pregnancy, STDs and HIV. This half-day training will help staff assist clients in reducing their sexual risk-taking. Topics will include client-centered counseling techniques, the stages of behavior change and how to assist clients in making realistic plans for behavior change.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the stages of behavior change.
- Identify a range of risk reduction behaviors.
- Describe how to support clients in developing realistic risk reduction steps.

RNs, medical assistants, counselors & educators.
Trainers
Amanda Newstetter, MSW is a Project Director at the Center for Health Training in Oakland, CA. She has worked in the field of HIV since 1984 and coordinated HIV counseling and testing services for Planned Parenthood for 7 years. For the last 15 years, she has conducted counseling training related to sexual and reproductive health throughout the western region.
Marsha Gelt, MPH is an experienced counselor and trainer and has provided training in family planning for over 26 years. She is dedicated to enhancing counselors’ confidence and skill in providing client-centered education and counseling.
Confirmation
Confirmations will be sent two weeks prior to the workshop and will include specific location, directions and other details. Participants are responsible for their own meals, travel and lodging. For more information regarding registration, call CHT at 510.835.3700.
Fees
All fees are per person.
- Title X-funded agencies: $15;
- Private/Other funding: $25.
- CE units are an additional $15.
A $10 late fee will be assessed for each registration received after the deadline. Fees can be refunded if cancellation is received 5 working days prior to the session.

Continuing Education
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 02604, for 4.2 contact hours. To receive credit, nurses must attend the entire course and present their license number at the workshop. All other applicants will receive certificates of participation.

Registrations must be received by March 23, 2010.
