Sharita Ambrose, MPH

Trainer

Sharita is a training specialist who delights in facilitation, interaction, and learning new things from those she trains. She received her undergraduate degree in Health Administration at Texas Southern University and her Master’s Degree in Public Health from A.T. Still University. She has worked in many aspects of the field of HIV/STD prevention which includes working with youth, high risk populations, and minority populations. In her seven years of service in the public health field she has strived to meet the challenges she faces in helping people to chose healthier choices to decrease risk factors for STDs and HIV/AIDS.

Allison A. Atterberry

Region VI Infertility Prevention Project Coordinator

Allison A. Atterberry, RN, BSN, joined CHT in the fall of 2008 as the Region VI Infertility Prevention Project Coordinator. As IPP coordinator, Allison works with Family Planning, STD, and Public Health Laboratory staff in the five states of Region VI, assisting in the facilitating of the CDC's Chlamydia and gonorrhea prevention program. Before coming to CHT in Austin, Allison worked with Missouri's Title X grantee coordinating a private $11 million grant to provide no-cost HPV vaccine to girls and women in Missouri.

Gail Blachly

Administrative Assistant

Gail ran her own public relation, marketing and graphic design business in Alexandria, Virginia for more than eighteen years before returning to Texas. After officially retiring (twice) she came to CHT where she assists in planning training events, and edits and designs workshop materials. Hers is the first voice you hear when you call the Austin office.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cain Clark

Training Manager

Lizzie has twelve years' experience helping the administrators and staff of Region VI family planning agencies. Her areas of expertise include needs assessment, negotiation and communication, marketing, training design, Patient Flow Analysis and clinic efficiency, Title X priorities, and evaluation of training impact. She also possesses extensive experience in the design and execution of distance learning projects, from telephone conferences to online training, which has stood her in good stead as Training Manager for Louisiana. She has additionally coordinated annual Clinical Conferences in Texas for DSHS for the past two years, which requires a tremendous amount of organizational and facilitation skills.

Hector J. Campos

Project Director

Although associated with the Center for Health Training as a consultant for many years, Hector Campos joined the staff in the summer of 2009. Hector Campos is the Project Director for the Title X Grant. He is the lead trainer for the national Male Family Planning Research Project. Mr. Campos has over 25 years experience in the public health field designing and delivering health training curriculums, providing technical assistance, training and support to various human service providers in public, private, and clinical settings. Prior to joining the Center for Health Training, Mr. Campos served as the CEO of Campos Training & Consulting Group. His principal areas of content expertise include Male Involvement, Fatherhood Development, Sexuality Education and Cultural Diversity. He is a nationally recognized trainer and keynote speaker and has provided training and technical assistance in Mexico, the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands.

Alfonso Carlon

Project Director

Alfonso Carlon is a Project Director and staff trainer with the Center for Health Training in Austin, Texas. He has served in numerous roles in public health over the past 19 years, including community clinic health educator, community outreach worker, state health services trainer-facilitator, and his current position as Project Director for the HIV/AIDS Prevention Education for Women Attending Minority Educational Institutions Project. Alfonso is widely known in the Title X community in Region VI, and provides training on a variety of topics including organizational cultural competency, skills-based cultural proficiency, male involvement in family planning, tuberculosis in foreign-born populations and technical assistance in developing HIV prevention education programs for hard-to-reach populations and minority colleges and universities. Alfonso is an avid gardener and has owned a landscaping business since 1989. He is also the proud father of two sons, ages 8 and 12.

Jennifer Curtiss, M.Ed.

Program Coordinator, Texas Infertility Prevention Project (TIPP)

Jennifer has been a program coordinator with CHT for over six years. She has a strong background in HIV/STD training and program development, needs assessment, and meeting facilitation. Her past experience in STD and reproductive health clinical settings makes her well suited in her role as TIPP Coordinator for the state of Texas which brings together state STD, family planning and laboratory partners to implement effective prevention strategies to reduce the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (Chlamydia) and its potentially destructive complications.

Connie Folse, MPH, CHES

Training Manager

Connie joined the Center for Health Training in 2009. She has a strong background in community health education and outreach, adolescent sexuality, needs assessment, curriculum development, and program evaluation. Connie’s previous experience working in HIV/STD and Title X Family Planning clinics helps her to evaluate and address the training needs of Family Planning service providers throughout Texas.

Lovdy Hamm Grossman

Associate Training Manager

Lovdy joined Center for Health Training in 2009 and serves as an Associate Training Manager primarily for Title X programs. She brings over 10 years of experience developing, managing and executing educational conferences and long-term training programs for non-profits, medical societies and for-profit companies.

Brenda L. Hanson

Regional Manager

Brenda has more than twenty-seven years of management and supervisory experience. She oversees the programmatic and financial management of all projects awarded to the Austin office. She has excellent facilitation skills, as evidenced by her experience with past national and regional planning committees and work groups. She has served on national boards of family planning and reproductive health membership organizations and has an in-depth knowledge of health care facilities management.

Training Coordinator

Picheska Marrero joined the Center for Health Training during the Winter of 2009. As Training Coordinator, she provides administrative and logistical event support for the Title X Family Planning Training Managers. Picheska's background is in hospitality with over 8 years of tourism and meeting planning experience.

Sandy Rice, M.Ed

Vice President

Sandy is the Regional Manager of the Austin office. In addition to supervising staff, conducting training events and facilitating workgroups, Sandy is also the lead designer of curricula in the Austin office, having written training manuals for audiences ranging from child care providers to prison inmates to health care managers. She has a strong background and experience in training of trainers, facilitation of strategic planning processes with non-profits, and state and regional coalitions and work groups, as well as in organizational development, staff and program leadership and cultural proficiency. Sandy is well versed in Title X regulations and guidelines, having written the online Title X Orientation.

Justin Sanders

Office Manager

Justin has worked for CHT since 2005 and oversees the operations of physical space and all equipment necessary to this project. He also serves as our in-house IT expert advising the Regional Managers on ways to meet the IT training needs of the staff and processes all incoming receivables and payables.

Anita Swayze

Program Coordinator

Anita Swayze started with the Center for Health training in October of 2008. She is the Program Coordinator for the HIV Prevention Education for Women Attending Minority Institutions Project. For the past 15 years, Anita developed, coordinated, and implemented various HIV/STI prevention projects focusing on high risk women through UT Southwestern Medical Center's Division of Community Women's Health Care in Dallas, TX. These outreach and clinic based initiatives allowed Anita to provide education, counseling, and community linkages to the Division's family planning and OB patients for many years.

Lori Weber

Training Manager

Lori came to work with the Center for Health Training in 2000, and has spent much of the time assessing state needs and planning and coordinating workshops and conferences. She has been involved with the creation of training resources, calendars, and online materials, as well as the evaluation of training and projects. She has worked extensively with CHT's trainers and training participants, and is considered an important resource for training needs. Areas of expertise include client satisfaction, utilization of distance learning technologies, and HIV prevention integration into family planning services. As Training Manager, she has worked with sites in Arkansas and Oklahoma to best serve the unique needs of those states.

Gracie Askew

Project & Training Manager

Gracie has worked at CHT since 1993, and has extensive experience with program administration, grant management, and with conducting and facilitating national and local trainings designed to address the needs of vulnerable and high-risk populations, including children and minority communities. She worked on developing protocols and guidelines about care for high-risk populations; she was part of a team that developed the National Health Training Guides for the Head Start Learning Community contributing to the publications' design, research, and field testing. Recently she was also the training manager of the East Bay AIDS Education and Training Center. She has practical and professional experience with cultural diversity issues related to health care, and provides training and technical assistance in these areas. Gracie will now focus her skills on designing e-learning on-line courses from trainings and materials developed by the agency.

Patricia A. Blackburn, MPH

Vice President

Pat has more than 30 years of management and supervisory experience. She oversees the programmatic and financial management of all projects awarded to the Oakland office. She also works closely with the Regional Managers in Seattle and Austin in these same areas as well as cross-office collaboration among staff. Specific efforts currently include coordination of the Region IX Infertility Prevention Project including a special project with the Pacific Jurisdictions and leading an "Enhancing Clinic Efficiency" project. Pat has excellent facilitation, fiscal and contract/grant management skills and provides staff development and consultation to organizations on a variety of topics and systems issues.

Dominique Campos, MBA

Training Coordinator

Dominique is the most recent addition to Oakland's Center for Health Training team. She graduated from the Lorry I. Lokey Graduate School of Business at Mills College in May of 2009 and joined CHT as a Training Coordinator. She aids with the Natural Family Planning project carried out in coordination with Georgetown and works with training managers to prepare and execute trainings for the Region IX Title X Family Planning Project.

Kathleen Clanon, MD, FACP

Director, East Bay AIDS Education and Training Center

Kathleen A. Clanon is director of the East Bay AIDS Education and Training Center, clinical director of the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center, and associate professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Clanon is an internist specializing in the care of people with HIV. She practices at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, and serves as the Medical Director of HIV ACCESS, a network of eight primary care sites serving people with H1V. She has special interests in reducing health disparities and in quality improvement.

David Herzstein Couch

Systems Manager

David began working for CHT in 1994, coordinating & managing trainings and assisting with publications, grants and research projects. Since 2007, he has been the systems manager for the Oakland office, mediating between our office systems (hardware, software and equipment) and our human staff—and trying to be patient with both (he finds that the humans are far more sensitive). Trained as a teacher in the 1980s, David has experience with supporting and training computer users and other learners. As the data manager for the Region IX Infertility Prevention Project (IPP), David supports the data subcommittee of the IPP Advisory Committee, collecting about a quarter of a million line-listed database records annually from several western states and processing them for quarterly submission to the CDC.

Marsha Gelt, MPH

Project Director

Marsha has worked with the Region IX Training Grant since 1994, and currently manages the project. She also is the Project Director for the Natural Family Planning Research project with Georgetown University, and manages CHT's work with the UCSF Bixby Center's National LARC acceptability study. She has worked on multiple federal, state and foundation projects, including the OPA National Male Research project, the CA Adolescent Family Life Project, and The California Wellness Foundation's Reducing Teen Pregnancy Project and Adolescent Outreach Initiative. She has conducted numerous needs assessment processes, technical assistance visits, continuing education workshops and conferences, nationally and in Saipan, Guam, Marshall Islands, Palau, Saipan and Micronesia. She is a member of the CA Adolescent Sexual Health Working Group, has developed training manuals and educational materials, and produced over 15 videos for audiences ranging from clients to staff to policymakers. Marsha is committed to improving services for women and is a skilled administrator, writer, trainer, and facilitator.

Helen Hom

Senior Accountant

Helen has been working at CHT since 2003. She assists the controller in various aspects of accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, payroll, the annual audit, account reconciliations and analysis. Helen also assists with monitoring and implementing internal controls and procedures.

Shailey Merchant Klinedinst, MPH

Training Manager, East Bay AIDS Education and Training Center; Project Director, Lotus Peer Education Training Project

Shailey is the training manager of the East Bay AIDS Education and Training Center, which is funded by the Ryan White Care Act to provide training and technical assistance to providers with HIV positive patients. She has also been working at CHT since 2006 as the director of the Lotus Project, a HRSA-funded national peer education training project. In that role, she provides training and technical assistance to women living with HIV, and to AIDS service organizations at a national level. She has particular expertise working with communities of color, and more than 10 years experience working in women's health and HIV, doing program management, evaluation, curriculum development, and training.

Jeanne Levine

Training Coordinator

Jeanne joined CHT in September 2009 and is new to the public health field. However, with a background in community involvement and environmental justice, Jeanne is passionate about serving the community and working towards the empowerment of under-served populations. Jeanne also has a background in marketing & communications, and enjoys the process of engaging the community and increasing awareness about health issues. Jeanne is currently a Training Coordinator for various projects at CHT, including the Region IX Title X Family Planning Training project, the Family PACT Program, and the Natural Family Planning Research project.

Renée Marshall, M.Ed.

Training Manager

Renée joined CHT in 2008, bringing expertise in teaching and training, particularly around issues of sexual health. She coordinates and presents trainings on family planning topics throughout Region IX. She is also coordinating a project to study the use of the Standard Days Method™, a fertility-awareness based birth control method using CycleBeads™. In addition, she co-coordinates the Western Region Institute for Teachers and Community Health Educators (WRITCHE), a five-day sexuality education skills-building institute. She also works closely with the California State Office of Family Planning to provide training on Family PACT programs for the state's medical providers. She has designed and facilitated multiple peer education programs for youth addressing HIV and teen pregnancy prevention and is passionate about educating youth, families, and providers on reducing unintended pregnancies and STIs.

Amanda Newstetter, MSW

Project Director

Amanda has worked at CHT since 1993. Passionate about HIV prevention, she worked in the mid 1980s as a social worker at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the University of California, San Francisco AIDS Health Project. She then worked with Planned Parenthood affiliates to help establish their HIV counseling and testing services. Amanda is the project director for a CDC-funded HIV Integration Project that helps family planning agencies better integrate HIV services. She coordinates a California Office of AIDS-funded initiative to help hospitals in Northern California provide rapid HIV testing in labor and delivery. She has coordinated the Western Region Institute for Community Health Educators (WRICHE), a five-day sexuality education skills-building institute since 1995. She conducts HIV and other sexual health training, provides technical assistance to health care organizations, and is a skilled counselor and program administrator.

Beatriz Reyes

Training Manager

Beatriz joined CHT in 2007. She currently coordinates and conducts trainings under the Title X Family Planning Training Grant for agencies throughout Region IX. She also co-coordinates the Western Region Institute for Teachers and Community Health Educators (WRITCHE), a five-day sexuality education skills-building institute. Beatriz has extensive experience designing and implementing STI, HIV, substance abuse, teen-pregnancy prevention programs, and has worked with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds in community-led projects. She is also the project coordinator for the Region IX Infertility Prevention Project.

Johanna Rosenthal, MPH

Training Manager

Johanna joined CHT in 1996. Passionate about family planning, Johanna spent several years working at Planned Parenthood San Francisco's administration and clinic services. At CHT, Johanna has worked on the Title X Family Planning Training Grant, coordinating the annual Reproductive Health Conference in Hawaii, as well as other training events and technical assistance visits and currently works on the Natural Family Planning Research project as well. She has also worked with the CDC Infertility Prevention Project, the CDC Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project, the Enhancing Clinic Efficiency Project, and the Adolescent Family Life Project, among others. Johanna has co-produced and edited several of CHT's training resources and materials, including the Family Planning Basics Trainer's Manual and Fundamental Skills for Case Managers Self-Study Guide, as well as assisted in the production of several of CHT's training videos.

Sean Schagane, CPA

Controller

Sean initially started with CHT in 1985 working part time in the finance department while attending San Francisco State University. After graduation, Sean honed his finance skills, working for a CPA firm that specializes in government and non-profit audits in California. His audits included the City and County of San Francisco, the Water Department, and the Municipal Railway. Sean rejoined CHT in 1994, and is responsible for managing the Finance Department. His responsibilities include preparing financial statements, managing audits, reviewing taxes, and reconciling the general ledger for CHT and its related companies, James Bowman Associates and CHT Resource Group. He works closely with the regional managers in Oakland, Seattle, and Austin regarding financial matters. Sean received his California CPA license in 1997.

Mary Catlin

Clinical Training Manager

Mary Catlin is a master’s prepared nurse specialized in the control of infectious disease, with focal interests in health-care acquired infections, sexually transmitted disease and vaccine preventable disease. She serves as a WSNA designated nurse planner for CHT, and is currently the Chair of the International Federation of Infection Control Societies Special interest Group working to reduce maternal mortality in resource scarce settings.

Karen Dluhosh, MC

Project Director

Karen Dluhosh is a Training Manager at CHT and has worked for over 25 years in family planning and reproductive health as a counselor, community educator, manager and professional trainer. She provides training for community professionals on FP/RH, as well as teaching effective communication and counseling skills and motivational interviewing strategies. She currently manages the Title X Training and Technical Assistance grant for Region X. She received her masters in counseling degree from Seattle University (SU).

Roberta Domres

Director of Operations

Roberta is an IT professional with a strong business background who possesses a unique combination of technical and communication skills. Since 1989, she has been determining productivity solutions, addressing clinic efficiency and patient flow assessments. Roberta recruits staff and consultants and coordinates project teams from planning through deliverables. She manages the activities of the data management system and the FP technical assistance and service assistance contracts for Region X.

David Fine, PhD

Associate Regional Manager and Research Director

David has been with CHT in Seattle for over 15 years. Dr Fine is skilled in the design and implementation of research, evaluation and assessment activities related to family planning/reproductive health; STD prevention, testing and treatment; substance abuse prevention; and community-based health and human service delivery. His background in psychology and social welfare informs his efforts addressing family planning outcomes at individual and system levels, as well as the prevention of sexual assault, substance abuse, and family violence. He has published more than 100 journal articles, papers, and conference presentations. Dr. Fine's Ph.D. is from the University of Washington, School of Social Work.

Jen Finkle-Weaver, MPH, MSW

Research Manager

Jen has over 10 years experience in program evaluation and RH education. Currently, she is the lead program evaluator on the CDC funded Family Planning HIV Integration Project for all three CHT regions (XI, XI and X). She is also primary evaluator on the SAMHSA funded Peer Recovery Network, a Seattle-based program serving the LGBT recovery community. She has conducted qualitative research for "A Closer Look," a study on issues facing women and girls in Puget Sound. Prior to joining CHT in 2006 Jen worked as a program evaluator with the Urban Research Center in Seattle.

Sarah Goldenkranz, MPH

Research Manager

Sarah is a Research Analyst at CHT. She contributes to research and evaluation by performing quantitative data analysis for a variety of projects including the Infertility Prevention Project (IPP), Natural Family Planning (NFP), the Lotus Project (PETS), and the Title X Family Planning Data Management System (DMS). Prior to joining CHT in 2008, Sarah earned her Masters degree in public health from Hebrew University in Israel, and worked in Zimbabwe researching the neurological effects of HIV.

Kirsten Harris-Talley

Program Manager

Kirsten is a Program Manager with CHT and has been with the agency since 2002. She works primarily in unintended teen pregnancy prevention, sexuality education, organizational capacity building and program planning. Kirsten is a Planning Committee member of the Northwest Reproductive Justice Collaborative. She also serves as a steering committee member of the Healthy Youth Alliance, a coalition of individuals, organizations and agencies working to increase the number of youth in Washington communities who are exposed to researched, proven and effective sexual health programs. Kirsten enjoys hanging with her book club, fighting for what is right and cooking with her husband.

Jeana Johnson

Training Coordinator

Jeana provides logistical and organizational support for several projects within the Seattle office, mainly focusing on sexual health education within Washington. Jeana earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Idaho and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration, with an emphasis in nonprofit organizations. In 2009, she returned from serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia, where she assisted a rural community to build their capacity in meeting healthcare needs. Her professional background includes reproductive healthcare, advocacy for women’s health, research and teaching assistance, and community outreach. In her free time Jeana enjoys great food, spending time with friends and family, and exploring the outdoors through camping and hiking.

Erin Koppang

Training Coordinator

Erin Koppang joined the staff of CHT in 2009. As a Training Coordinator, Erin serves as the first point of contact for the Seattle office, provides administrative support to a variety of projects, and oversees the registration process for all trainings. She works most closely with Region X Family Planning Training and the Region X Infertility Prevention Project. Erin recently earned a BA in Communication Studies and Women’s Studies and brings experience in event planning, volunteer coordinating, public speaking, and office administration to CHT. A native Minnesotan, Erin is enjoying getting to know her new city.

LaJuana Johnson

Project Director

LaJuana Johnson is a Training Director for CHT. Her expertise covers the areas of sexuality education, sexual health, program development and management, working with diverse populations, youth development, cultural proficiency, and teambuilding. LaJuana has been working in FP/RH for over 14 years as an educator, trainer, and program director. She has designed and implemented educational programs, workshops, and training events for adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds.

Wendy Nakatsukasa-Ono, MPH

Program and Research Director

Wendy has more than 20 years of experience in public health. For the last ten years, she has served as Program and Research Manager at CHT. Wendy has managed and contributed to a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research, evaluation, training and technical assistance projects including: integrating HIV prevention into family planning services; increasing male involvement in FP/RH services; improving FP/RH services to individuals from culturally diverse communities; and, exploring racial/ethnic differences and disparities in chlamydia. Currently, she manages the Region X Infertility Prevention Project. In addition, for the last 13 years, Wendy has served as Community Health Planner for the Center for MultiCultural Health (CMCH), a minority community-based organization.

April Pace, JD

Vice President

April Pace is CHT's Regional Manager. Ms. Pace has over 20 years experience working in public health. Her areas of expertise include: organizational development and cultural proficiency; guiding collaborations with community-based providers, health departments and federal agencies; and technical assistance to health agencies in clinic management. She has been active on the Boards of local and national organizations serving low income and homeless communities, including National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, AIDS Housing of Washington, the Downtown Emergency Service Center and Northwest Health Law Advocates. Ms. Pace graduated from George Washington University, National Law Center and from New York University.

John Perkins, Ph.D.

Training Manager

John joined CHT in 2009. Several years before that, however, John worked closely with CHT as a consultant on several of their tobacco prevention grants. His experience includes infant mortality prevention, boosting adolescent life skills, training, facilitation, and conflict resolution. Away from work, John enjoys writing, harvesting wild plants for food and medicine, and fine dining.

Afsaneh Rahimian, Ph.D.

Research Manager

Afsaneh has over 15 years experience conducting evaluation and research studies in public health programs addressing substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention, violence prevention, early childhood learning and other programs targeting children and families. She uses her skills to collect and analyze qualitative data using ethnography, focus groups, and in-depth interviews to supplement survey data. Dr. Rahimian’s work has also focused on community based programs serving diverse cultural populations. She strives to illustrate the relevance of empirical data for strengthening programs. Currently, her projects include researching Natural Family Planning (NFP) and evaluating Science Based Approaches to Teen Pregnancy Prevention. Dr. Rahimian’s Ph.D. is from the University of Southern California, School of Urban and Regional Planning. Prior to joining CHT, she served as a research faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago for almost a decade.

Ginny Tanner, CPL, MBA

Fiscal and Administrative Manager

Ginny Tanner is the Fiscal and Administrative Manager for the Center for Health Training/James Bowman Associates in Seattle. She has extensive experience in the management of sponsored projects for profit and non-profit organizations and has overseen grants and contracts from federal, state and local agencies. Responsibilities have included a wide range of pre-award and post-award functions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, terms and conditions and oversight of domestic and foreign subcontracts. Ginny holds a C.P.L., a Master's in Business Administration and a Bachelor's in Mathematics.

Dan Weiner

Training Coordinator

Dan is a Training Coordinator for CHT and has been with the agency since 2007. He coordinates all logistical aspects of meetings, workshops and conferences for Region X Family Planning. Earning a BA in political science at UW, Dan has worked with numerous local political and non-profit organizations in the Puget Sound. Since 2003, he has worked as an improvisational actor for EffectiveArts, assisting social workers, journalists and health care professionals with improving their communication skills. Additionally, Dan continues as a teaching artist at Arts Corps, where he combines his joy of teaching youth with various forms of performance art.

Eric Wheeler

Web/Graphic Designer

Eric is the Web Designer for CHT and the Graphic Designer for the Seattle office. He holds an AAS in Graphic Design and Illustration from Seattle Central Community College and a Bachelor of Arts from Washington State University. Eric works closely with program staff to generate web-related graphics and web pages, as well as brochures, training manuals, charts, tables, and various illustrations and logos.
